Mountain Biking in North Wales: A Wild and Peaceful Base for Your MTB Holiday

North Wales is one of Britain’s great mountain bike and MTB destinations. I know. I ride. A lot! I’m happy to help you decide where to ride yourself.

There are uplift-served bike parks, purpose-built trail centres, remote forest trails, natural singletrack, secret off piste trails and huge mountain landscapes—all within one remarkably compact region.

The only real problem is choosing where to ride first.

Located near Corwen in the Dee Valley, Greener Glamping provides peaceful yurt accommodation for mountain bikers exploring North Wales and Mid Wales. From here, you can reach Revs Bike Park at Llangynog, Coed y Brenin, Dyfi Bike Park, One Giant Leap, Penmachno, Coed Llandegla, Gwydir Forest, Dyfi Forest and many other popular riding areas.

Rather than staying beside one particular trail centre, you can use Greener Glamping as a base for a varied mountain-bike break, riding somewhere different each day and returning each evening to the peace and quiet of our small off-grid glamping retreat.

Mountain-bike accommodation near Revs Bike Park – only 30 minutes away

Revolution Bike Park—better known to riders simply as Revs—is located at Llangynog and is one of the closest major mountain-biking destinations to Greener Glamping.

Revs is aimed at gravity riders, with a mixture of traditional natural downhill tracks and newer purpose-built lines. Its terrain includes some seriously steep and technical riding, alongside jumps, freeride features and faster flowing sections.

The park is being refreshed and redeveloped following extensive forestry work, with uplift days and pedal-access sessions available on selected dates.

For riders planning a trip to Revs Bike Park, Greener Glamping offers the chance to combine a proper day on the hill with a very different kind of evening: cooking outside, relaxing beside the fire and recovering in the peace of the Welsh countryside.

Always check current opening dates, trail availability, riding requirements and booking arrangements directly with Revs before travelling.

Explore North Wales from one MTB base

Greener Glamping is well placed for riders who want to explore more than one bike park or trail centre during their stay.

Some of the best-known mountain-biking destinations within reach include:

Revs Bike Park, Llangynog

One of the most convenient gravity-riding options from Greener Glamping, Revs offers downhill, freeride and technical riding for capable and experienced mountain bikers.

Dyfi Bike Park – If you know you know…

Located in Esgair Forest near Machynlleth, Dyfi Bike Park offers uplift-served downhill and enduro riding on a large forested mountain.

It is a destination for experienced riders rather than a conventional family trail centre, and advance booking is required.

Antur Stiniog – quickest uplift in the west!

Set among the dramatic slate landscapes around Blaenau Ffestiniog, Antur Stiniog offers uplift-served gravity riding in the mountains of Eryri.

Its open, rocky terrain provides a distinct riding experience—and one that can feel particularly Welsh when the weather joins in.

Coed y Brenin Forest Park

Coed y Brenin was Britain’s first purpose-built mountain-bike centre and remains one of the best-known riding destinations in Wales.

Its waymarked mountain-bike trails range from easier routes for newer riders to long, technical trails intended for experienced mountain bikers. There are also gravel routes, a skills area and visitor facilities.

Penmachno Mountain Bike Trails

Penmachno is often described as a hidden gem of North Wales mountain biking.

Its roughly 30 kilometres of remote, natural-feeling singletrack and forest trails provide a very different experience from a commercial bike park. Riders can tackle the two loops separately or combine them into one substantial ride.

Gwydir Forest and Betws-y-Coed

The forests surrounding Betws-y-Coed contain classic North Wales mountain-bike terrain, with long climbs, rocky descents and extensive forest scenery.

Gwydir is a good choice for riders looking for a substantial pedal-powered day rather than an uplift session.

Coed Llandegla – One Planet Adventure

Coed Llandegla is one of the most popular purpose-built mountain-bike trail centres in the region.

Its graded trails make it suitable for a broader mixture of riders, from those developing their skills to experienced mountain bikers seeking longer and more technical routes.

Dyfi Forest

The vast Dyfi Forest, between Machynlleth and Dolgellau, is one of the most atmospheric mountain-biking areas in Wales. Its steep wooded hillsides sit beneath the mountains of southern Eryri, threaded with forest roads, rocky singletrack, rivers and the remains of the area’s historic slate workings.

For pedal-powered riding, the forest is home to the ClimachX trail at Ceinws, a red-graded route for experienced mountain bikers. The ride combines a substantial forest climb with fast, technical singletrack and a memorable final descent. The wider Machynlleth area also has a strong mountain-biking culture and a network of demanding natural routes for riders who are confident with navigation and remote terrain.

Within the forest, Dyfi Bike Park offers a very different experience. Created by Dan Atherton and his trail-building team, the 650-acre park provides uplift-served riding on trails graded from red through to extremely demanding black and pro-level lines. It is best suited to capable riders looking for purpose-built descents, jumps, technical features and serious mountain terrain.

Whether you choose the classic forest trails or a booked uplift day at the bike park, Dyfi makes an excellent destination for one of the bigger riding days during a stay at Greener Glamping. (Natural Resources Wales)

More than bike parks and trail centres

Some of the best mountain-bike rides in North Wales do not begin beneath a bike-park banner.

The region is filled with forest roads, bridleways, moorland crossings, old tracks and quieter mixed-surface routes. The Dee Valley, Berwyn Mountains, Llangollen area, Dyfnant Forest, Dyfi Forest and countryside surrounding Bala all offer possibilities for exploratory mountain-bike, e-MTB and gravel rides.

Access rights and trail conditions vary, and not every tempting-looking forest track is open to cyclists. Check current mapping, rights of way, forestry restrictions, weather conditions and local signage before riding.

The Welsh landscape is beautiful, but it does occasionally attempt to eat bikes!

A peaceful alternative to conventional MTB accommodation

A mountain-bike trip does not have to mean staying in a busy hotel, a crowded holiday park or a bunkhouse filled with the gentle fragrance of twelve pairs of wet riding shoes.

At Greener Glamping, our yurts sit within a small off-grid eco-retreat surrounded by woodland, wildlife and open countryside.

After a full day of climbing, descending, jumping, sliding and occasionally making questionable line choices, you can return somewhere genuinely peaceful.

Cook a proper meal, light the fire, sit beneath the dark sky watching the stars and UFOs, and allow your legs to negotiate tomorrow’s plans.

Greener Glamping is particularly suited to:

  • Couples who ride together
  • Friends planning a North Wales mountain-bike weekend
  • Riders visiting Revs Bike Park, Dyfi Bike park, Antur Stiniog Bike Park
  • Riders touring several North Wales trail centres
  • E-MTB riders looking for longer exploratory days
  • Mountain bikers who prefer quiet, small-scale accommodation
  • Riders travelling with a partner who may not want to spend every waking hour discussing tyre compounds

Bike washing and practical arrangements

Mountain bikes rarely return from a Welsh ride looking quite as pristine as they did at breakfast.

Bike-washing facilities are available at Greener Glamping, allowing guests to clean off the worst of the mud before the next ride or the journey home.

Access to basic tools or workshop facilities may also be possible by prior arrangement. Guests should contact us before booking to discuss the number and type of bikes they plan to bring and any particular requirements.

We are continuing to develop the facilities available to cyclists and mountain bikers, so please ask about the current arrangements when making your enquiry.

Bring your e-MTB

North Wales is outstanding territory for electric mountain bikes.

An e-MTB makes it possible to explore longer forest routes, tackle more climbing and link together areas that might otherwise be difficult to cover in a single day.

It is still mountain biking, of course. You merely arrive at the top with enough energy left to pretend that the climb was easy.

Guests bringing electric bikes should tell us when booking and bring their own chargers, cables and adaptors. Please contact us beforehand to confirm the current charging arrangements.

Plan a multi-day North Wales mountain-bike break

Staying for several nights gives you the flexibility to adapt your riding to the weather, trail conditions and condition of your legs.

A possible mountain-bike itinerary could include:

Arrival day: Settle into your yurt and take a short local ride or explore the Dee Valley.

Day one: Book an uplift or pedal session at Revs Bike Park in Llangynog.

Day two: Ride one of the waymarked routes at Coed y Brenin or explore Penmachno.

Day three: Visit Coed Llandegla, Gwydir Forest or another North Wales trail centre.

Day four: Book a gravity day at Dyfi Bike Park or Antur Stiniog—or choose a gentler local ride before travelling home.

This is only one possibility. North Wales contains enough mountain biking to build trips for downhill riders, trail-centre regulars, e-MTB explorers, gravel riders and people who simply enjoy disappearing into a forest with an optimistic route loaded onto their phone.

Stay somewhere different

Greener Glamping is not trying to be a conventional bike-park lodge.

What we offer is a peaceful, natural place to stay within reach of some of the best mountain biking in North Wales and Mid Wales.

You can spend the day riding technical downhill tracks, forest singletrack or remote mountain routes, then return to a warm yurt, a fire and the quiet of an off-grid retreat.

No traffic outside the bedroom.

No crowded hotel bar.

No television murmuring through the wall.

Just the evening, the landscape and the important business of deciding where to ride tomorrow.
